The crack of dawn tends to be the only time of day when many of us are able to get in a good run. Whether it’s family, work, or social obligations, finding time to fit your workout into your schedule can feel like a never ending challenge. We get it! Thankfully, early mornings are also a great time to hit the road and healthy way to start the day on a positive note. So fellow runners, let’s rise and run!

Here are 5 essential tips to make your next early morning run a success:

1. Plan ahead: Waking up and trying to make a plan and gather your gear while you’re still half asleep can be a nightmare. Avoid scavenging for your favorite pair of pants by laying out what you need the night before. You’ll thank yourself in the morning, trust us. Planning your route beforehand is also a great way to get moving in the early morning. Need help creating new routes? Check out Map My Run! Download the App for Android or iOS to map your routes and track your training. And remember to always tell a friend or family member where you’re headed before you hit the road. It’s important to keep loved ones in the loop so they know where you are and how long you’ll be gone for in case of an emergency.

2. Eat right: Before you hit the ground running, make sure you fuel your body with some nutrients. Go for a lighter snack that’s a mix of protein and easily digestible carbs to give yourself an early morning pick-me-up (and avoid cramps during your run). Start with half a banana, a piece of toast with peanut butter, or a light shake. Over time you’ll find what works best for your body! For more snack ideas, take a look at Pop Sugar’s list of what foods to eat and what ones to avoid before you run here.

3. Dress accordingly: Running in the early morning is great, but until the clocks change, incorporating reflective gear and lights into your attire is a must. Not only will it help you see where you’re going, but it will help others see you! While it’s still dark out, grab yourself a headlamp, reflective vest, or flashing armband. There are tons of options out there. To start, take a look at Fleet Feet Sports Safety & Visibility Gear.

4. Listen smart: We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again — for most of us, having a good playlist is essential to motivating you to go that extra mile. But while you’re jamming out, make sure you always leave one ear open to help you stay aware of your surroundings. Need a good running playlist full of motivational tunes? Look no further.
