Wearsafe is intended to be used during uncomfortable moments when you just need a friend to check up on you, as well as in serious emergency situations. Therefore, we want to make sure parents are aware of their child’s use of the Wearsafe App. We suggest not including children in responder networks as some situations could be too traumatic for them to handle. But we believe it should be up to the parent to decide if their child is ready for that kind of responsibility.

Wearsafe also recognizes the importance of the privacy of children and of all of its users. The Wearsafe App is designed to comply with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (“COPPA”) which defines how we collect, use, and disclose the personal information we collect from children under thirteen years old as part of our Service. Parents may register for our Services on behalf of themselves and their children, and configure the Services for the safety of their children, via their children’s mobile devices.

The Wearsafe app is currently supported by iOS 8.0 and newer on iPhone 4S and newer, or by phones with Android 4.4 and newer with Bluetooth® low energy technology. Full compatibility notes at devices.

No. When activated, your Wearsafe button will notify a network of people you have selected. They will instantly receive pertinent information regarding your situation and will act on your behalf. Sometimes that may be a 911 call, but sometimes it might just mean heading next door to your location to check in.

If it is necessary to call Emergency Responders, your network members can easily contact 911 directly from the Alert screen.

No need for your network members to purchase a subscription to get your alerts, but they will need to download the Wearsafe App to get all of the critical alert information the app provides.

When an alert is sent, your network receives a short text and an email with the private alert code, your profile information, and your location when the alert was sent. At that point, they should go to their Wearsafe App to view your continuously updated location, hear audio from your event, and join the private network chat so they can help coordinate the best response.

Yes, to send an alert, you must be subscribed to the Wearsafe service. Though anyone can download the Wearsafe App for free and receive alerts. Alerts are sent as emails and texts, but the most informative alert information comes through the Wearsafe app.

We like to say “anyone who can press a button” should use Wearsafe. We envision this lifesaving technology being an integral part of the daily lives of almost everyone – from students, athletes and parents, to travelers and adventure enthusiasts. Everyone has moments when they could use a little or a lot of help from their friends and family, and with Wearsafe you are prepared to get it at any time.

Wearsafe works in any country that supports compatible iPhone and Android devices, and where you have Internet service.

If you are out of range when you send an alert, the app will “hold” the alert and send it when data service reconnects.

Wearsafe Tag

The Tag is designed to work with your phone 24/7, so that no matter when you need to reach out, it’s ready to go. If you leave it behind for a few days, it will make sure to immediately reconnect when your phone is back in Bluetooth range. If you plan to leave your Tag behind for more than a week, we recommend removing the battery until then. As soon as the Tag has power again, it will reconnect to your phone and be able to start alerts again.

Your Wearsafe subscription remains active, so that even if you don’t have your Tag available, you’ll always be able to start an alert through the app home screen.

When your "activators in range" is 0, it means that no Tag will be able to start an alert for you. This can happen if Bluetooth is turned off on your phone, if the battery in your Tag is dead or removed, or if the Tag is outside your phone's Bluetooth range. It can also happen if the Tag pairing to your phone is lost or interrupted.

Here's how to get your Tag to connect when you know it's nearby your phone. Stop whenever you see that the Tag is connected in the App's activators screen.

  1. Look in your Wearsafe App's activators screen to see if the Tag is listed. If it isn't, do steps 4 and 5 now.
  2. Turn Bluetooth off and back on on your phone.
  3. Pop out and reinstall the battery in your Tag. We show how in "Changing your Battery” at the top of this page. If you recently got a Low Battery warning from the App, change the battery.
  4. Look in your phone's Bluetooth settings to see if your Tag is listed as a paired device. If it is, turn your phone off and back on.
  5. If your Tag was listed during step 4, delete the pairing in your phone settings. Go to the Wearsafe App and use Activators In Range > Pair New Activator to set up. We show how in "Pairing your Tag” at the top of this page.
  6. Change the Tag battery for one you know is new.

If you're still having any problems or if you are using Android 5.0-5.0.2, tap More > Contact Wearsafe in the app or send an email to [email protected].

Yes. Just remove your Tag from your list of Activators, and the new Tag owner can add it to their device and account. The new owner will need to have an active subscription to use the Tag.

If you have multiple Tags in your household, it is helpful to label each to make sure you are using the right one. We have designed a space on the back of each Tag where you can write your name in permanent ink if you wish.

Yes, the Wearsafe Tag comes with a 90-day limited warranty.

The battery percent indication shown during Tag pairing is approximate. When your Tag’s battery is low and function could be affected, you will receive notifications to replace the battery, including a badge on the activators in range button in the App.

The Wearsafe Tag uses a standard CR2032 coin cell battery which lasts 3 to 6 months with normal use, no charging needed. Tag vibration is the greatest drain on battery power, so frequent alerts or activator testing can reduce battery life significantly.

As long as the Tag is within range of your paired phone running the Wearsafe App in the background, it is working. You don’t need to take any other steps in order to be prepared. If you are storing your Tag for an extended period of weeks or months, we recommend removing the battery while it is stored, and reinstalling when you’re ready to use the Tag again.

It’s easy! If you would like to test your Wearsafe Tag, go to the Activators section in your Wearsafe App, tap the paired activator you wish to try, and tap “Test activator”. This is helpful when you first set up your Tag so you can get familiar with it before you encounter an emergency.

If you press the button, you’ll know you’ve sent an alert when you feel the Tag vibrate, and your network will get an alert.

You can deactivate the alert as soon as you realize it. Simply go to the Home screen in the Wearsafe App, slide the alert button to the OFF position, and enter your birthday. Your network will instantly get your “Closed Alert” notification as well.

When you press the button on your Tag for help, it will silently vibrate each time someone in your network views your alert. So even if you can’t reach your phone, you will know that help is on the way. In an emergency, knowing that you are not alone could change the way you respond and dramatically improve the outcome of your situation.

There are two options to get up and running again. One, the Activators screen in the app will show a connection when the phone gets back in range of the Tag. This can help figure out whether a Tag is at home, work, school, or other places you visit frequently, and can be used to help you find your lost Tag if you know which places you went since the last time you knew you had the Tag with you.

Also, you can purchase a replacement Tag at any time.

To turn off press and hold, make sure you have turned on either triple press or single press first.

At least one activator setting must be selected. If you have only one setting checked, unchecking that one will automatically select the default option, press and hold.

Subscription Information

If you originally downloaded the Wearsafe App and chose not to subscribe, and you have a Tag already, you can upgrade at any time to send alerts. Open your app and tap the button that says “more”. Open the Account Information screen. Tap the “subscribe” button, then tap “I have a Tag”.

Wearsafe subscriptions are not transferable. If there is an error in the email address provided during subscription, please contact [email protected] for assistance.

To manage your own subscription, in the Wearsafe App tap more > account information > manage subscription. This will take you to wearsafe.com, your iTunes Store profile, or your Google Play Store profile, depending on where you subscribed.

You can respond to alerts for free, and subscribers can have as many responders as they like at no charge.

Your safety is important and shouldn’t be trusted to a free app. It’s not just your phone sending messages, the alerts you send rely on a substantial infrastructure to coordinate the information you trust will be sent. The costs to develop and maintain that infrastructure needed to make Wearsafe work are significant. The small subscription cost ensures that when you need Wearsafe most, it will perform.

Each Wearsafe account must have its own subscription to send alerts, so that your responders know which person needs help during an alert.

When you subscribe on our site, you get a free Tag for each subscriber, and get as many subscriptions at once as you need for the people you care about. If you already have Tags, the iTunes Store and Google Play Store both allow you to purchase subscriptions with a single payment method for multiple accounts.

iOS Users: You can set up Apple Family Sharing. Use the current iTunes Store account as the organizer, then invite each other user to join the Family using existing or new Apple IDs of their own. Each Wearsafe user can then make an in-app purchase of a subscription which will use the organizer’s payment method. This may require approval by the organizer, depending on your settings.

Android Users: You can set up a family payment method. Use the current Google Play Store account as the family manager, then invite each other user to join using existing or new Google Play Store accounts of their own. Each Wearsafe user can then make an in-app purchase of a subscription which will use the common family payment method. This may require approval by the family manager, depending on your settings.

Wearsafe App

Responders are people you know and trust to help you out when you need it. Responders can help best when they have a smartphone and keep the Wearsafe app installed.

Wearsafe uses networks to organize and notify groups of people you trust as your responders. All the responders in a network will be notified and be able to communicate with each other when you start an alert. Some ideas for choosing who is in a network:
- By location: Responders who are nearby have more options for how to help you. Create networks for when you are in different locations, like away at school and home with family, or traveling between cities regularly.
- By social group: A network for when you’re working and another for friends lets you get help from people who understand what kind of situations you may be in when you start an alert.

As many as you want. We find that a good trusted network is typically 3-5 responders, since it’s easier for a smaller group to coordinate a response. You can include the same responder in as many different networks as you like.

As many as you can think of! And the only person who can see the name of your networks is you.

No. Your networks will only see where you are you once you’ve pressed the button for help.

As a sender of an alert you can view your own alert timeline and communicate with your network of friends and family via the Wearsafe chat feature, but the audio files will not be accessible to you. During the time that an alert is “Open”, Wearsafe uses your phone’s microphone to collect audio of your situation and send it to your network. If we allowed you to listen to your own audio files, it would interrupt the recording process and likely confuse the people who are coming to your aid.

If the Wearsafe app is not finding your location, make sure your location services are set to “always” in the app’s settings. (Found in your phone’s settings under the Wearsafe App)

A phone’s ability to determine its location is affected by a number of different factors, including device model, OS version, battery status, power saving modes, cellular network and network conditions, weather conditions, and immediate surroundings. For example, a person may seem to be slowly moving near their actual location while in a downtown area on a very cloudy day, because weather and building walls are affecting GPS reception.

When an alert is sent by a user, Wearsafe uses a hybrid system to provide the most accurate location by combining separate technologies as they are available: Assisted GPS (A-GPS), Bluetooth Low Energy beacons, Wi-Fi positioning, and cellular network positioning.

If you are in the process of pairing your Tag to your Wearsafe App and it is not recognizing your Tag, we suggest you try to turn off Bluetooth, wait 10 seconds, turn it back on, and try again. If that also doesn’t work, try again after restarting the app.

When pairing your Tag with Android, remember that your six-digit PIN is 00+ the 4 digits inside the Tag’s battery bay.

Wearsafe Rewind is a feature which allows the app to send your network an audio clip of up to 60 seconds before the alert was sent. This could be very valuable information for your network to decide how to respond to your alert.

Please be aware that Wearsafe Rewind does affect your phone’s battery life so we suggest using it when you think you might be in a risky situation, but not on a regular basis.

Wearsafe Rewind can be turned on and off in the ‘More’ section of your Wearsafe App.

Wearsafe Rewind cannot record audio while other apps are recording, such as video recording or VoIP chat apps.

On Android, well-behaved apps like Wearsafe will hand off control of your microphone as necessary. Some apps may not work correctly with the microphone while Wearsafe Rewind is enabled. Those apps may not take control correctly from, or release it correctly to, Wearsafe.

We highly recommend that you move the Wearsafe app’s icon to the dock on the home screen of your mobile phone so it’s always in view, accessible and ready when you need it.

For iPhone users, simply touch and hold the Wearsafe app icon until all of the apps jiggle on the screen. Once they’re jiggling, keep touching the Wearsafe icon and drag it to the bottom row of app icons. After you are done moving the Wearsafe app, simply press the home button.

For Android users, from the home screen, simply open the app drawer, find the Wearsafe app icon, then long-press the app icon and drag it onto your dock.

Audio files are sent every 60 seconds. If an alert is closed less than 1 minute after it was opened, and the sender has Wearsafe Rewind disabled, no audio file will be sent out.

The sender of the alert may have denied access to their phone’s microphone during App set up. To provide audio and use the full Wearsafe Platform, each subscriber must grant access to the microphone to the Wearsafe App in their phone’s Settings app.

Account

You can order a tag any time, and you can send alerts by opening the app and sliding the ! control on the app home screen.

If you originally downloaded the Wearsafe App and chose not to subscribe, you can upgrade at any time to send alerts. Open your app and tap the button at the bottom of the home screen which says, “I want to send alerts”.

The app will take you to our website to complete the subscription process, including shipment of your free Tag.

Each person who downloads the Wearsafe App, with or without the ability to send alerts, must sign up for their own account. This way it ensures that the information communicated in an alert is accurate to the person who sent it.

You can have multiple Tags per account, but not multiple accounts per Tag. And we suggest you download the app for the first time on the mobile phone you will be using with Wearsafe. It is meant to be mobile after all!

If you want to delete your account, or if you are a parent and would like to delete your child’s Personal Information, you may contact us in writing at [email protected] with the subject “Delete My Account.” In any correspondence on behalf of yourself, please include your name and email address. In any correspondence on behalf of a child, please include the child’s name, email address and the parent’s name, email address and telephone number. To protect children’s privacy and security, we will take reasonable steps to verify a parent’s identity before granting access to any personal information.

Note: It may take up to 48 hours to delete your account.

Mobile Settings

When you need help from a friend or family member, you can rely on Wearsafe to provide them with all of the most important information about your situation – that includes your location and any audio that can be collected around you.

To ensure that this critical information can be provided to your trusted network when you need them:

  • Open your phone’s ‘Settings’ app
  • Scroll down to ‘App Manager’ and select it.
  • Scroll all the way down to select Wearsafe from your list of installed apps
  • Turn on ‘Show Notifications’
  • If you are running Android 6 Marshmallow or newer, make sure each of the following is turned on in ‘Permissions’:
    • ‘Location’
    • ‘Microphone’
  • If you are running Android 7 Nougat, make sure to give Wearsafe unrestricted data when Data Saver is enabled.

When a friend or loved-one needs your help and sends you an alert through Wearsafe, it’s important to set up your phone so you can easily be notified.

To ensure that you will be alerted:

  • Open your phone’s ‘Settings’ app
  • Scroll down to ‘App Manager’ and select it.
  • Scroll all the way down to select Wearsafe from your list of installed apps
  • Turn on ‘Show Notifications’
  • If you are running Android 6 “Marshmallow” or newer, make sure ‘Location’ is turned on in ‘Permissions’
  • If you are running Android 7 “Nougat”, make sure to give Wearsafe unrestricted data when Data Saver is enabled.

When a friend or loved one needs your help and sends you an alert through Wearsafe, it’s important to set up your phone so you can easily be notified.

To ensure that you will be alerted:

  • Open your phone’s ‘Settings’ app
  • Scroll all the way down and select Wearsafe from your list of installed apps
  • Select ‘Notifications’
  • Toggle each of the following features to the ‘on’ position (it will turn green)
    • ‘Allow Notifications’
    • ‘Show in Notification Center’
    • ‘Sounds’
    • ‘Badge App Icon’
    • ‘Show in Lock Screen’
  • Select ‘Alert’ (far right selection with banner in the middle of the phone) as the Alert Style
  • On iOS 10, you can get text alert sounds even with your ringer turned off or Do Not Disturb active:
    • Open the Contacts app
    • Tap + to create a new contact
    • Set the name as Wearsafe Alerts
    • Tap the plus to add phone. Use mobile number 33947
    • Tap Text Tone
    • Toggle Emergency Bypass to the ‘on’ position (it will turn green).

We need to always be ready to respond and send out alerts when you press the button on your Tag. By keeping the App in the background, you can be sure that we can send alerts when it really matters. If you had to manually start and stop the application, then you would always have to remember to restart the app when you potentially need help. The problem with this is we often find that we need help when we least expect it. Running Wearsafe in the background allows us to be prepared even when you are not.

The Wearsafe App has been designed to use as little of your battery as possible with Bluetooth low energy technology and other optimizations, but does need to be running to work.

In order to create a powerful and effective app that helps to keep you safe, Wearsafe needs to access many of your mobile phone’s services and capabilities. Most mobile operating systems require that users confirm access to these services the first time the app tries to use them.

If you deny access to your Location Services/GPS, Contacts, Microphone, or Bluetooth, you will not be using the Wearsafe App to its fullest potential. For instance, your location and audio from your event are only sent if you allow the app to access them from your phone. And if someone were to send you an alert, by allowing notifications, you will be sure to see their call for help as fast as possible.

We strongly believe in your privacy and do not share any of your information with outside parties. Your location and audio are not accessible to your network until you send an alert, so no need to worry about being tracked.

Yes, for the location feature to work, you must have GPS enabled on your device.

Alerts

Subscribers can send alerts by pressing the button on their Tag or moving the slider on the Wearsafe App home screen to the ‘ON’ position (orange). Only the sender can turn off an alert. All alerts are turned off (or closed) by moving the slider on the home screen to the ‘OFF’ position (blue) and entering the sender's birth date for confirmation.

If you send a Wearsafe alert, the members of your selected network will receive:

  • Your GPS location and directions to your location
  • Audio from your situation from the moment you press the button on your Tag, or up to 60 seconds before if you have Wearsafe Rewind turned on.
  • Access to a private group chat to coordinate the best response
  • Your image, personal profile and medical information, if provided
  • Direct link to call 911
  • Individual alert code

Wearsafe is intended to be used during uncomfortable moments when you just need a friend to check up on you, as well as in serious emergency situations. You should choose network members who you trust have your best interests in mind and will make good, responsible decisions as to how to best help you.

We suggest not including children as some situations could be too traumatic for them to handle. You should choose people you trust can remain calm and get you the most appropriate help for any situation.

For Kickstarter Backers

Some Kickstarter backers get one or more lifetime subscriptions to the Wearsafe app. With a subscription, you can send alerts to any number of people and those people do not need a subscription to receive the alerts (they will still need the Wearsafe app to receive alerts).

To set up lifetime subscriptions:

  • Go to the link we sent you (the backer) in an email with the subject titled, ‘Subscription link’ from [email protected] (check your ‘promotions’ or spam folder if you cannot find it.)
  • Enter the email(s) you wish to use for the account(s) who will be sending alerts. For example, if you ordered 2 Tags and one is for you and one is for your sister, you would enter your email and your sister’s email into the 2 fields. That way you both have the ability to send alerts for free from those emails. NOTE: When you enter a person’s email, they will immediately be sent a confirmation email with Wearsafe’s info. So you might want to wait if it is intended as a gift! You can always save the link and go back to it at a later date to enter the rest of the emails.
  • Download the Wearsafe App onto the mobile phones you will be using for each person sending alerts and register each with the same email you entered to activate that lifetime subscription. (For instance, your sister should register her new Wearsafe app with the email you (the Kickstarter backer) entered for her.) She will have control over her own account.

Please be sure to double check that you are using valid email addresses as you will use them to set up accounts. Also, you can change email addresses after you have registered.

Sorry to hear that the email about how to set up your lifetime service is missing! In late October 2015, we sent each backer an email with the subject titled, ‘Subscription link’ from [email protected]. For many people using Gmail, the email went into their “Promotions” section (if using a desktop it is a tab at the top of your list of emails in Gmail).
